Unsupportive Parent

At the beginning of the year, I placed one of my students on the wrong bus. It was an honest mistake, she was brought back to the school and mom was called to come get her. When mom got to the school she was irate. She yelled and screamed at me for putting her child on the wrong bus. Ever since then she has tried to inconvenience me in any way possible. She has also made it a point to talk about me and knit pick everything I do to other parents in the classroom. How do I address this situation? Should I get administration involved, or should I handle it myself?

I would document the issues from the beginning and go to administration for advice. Often handling it ourselves can be taken the wrong way by parents and administration should be aware of the situation. Handling yourself as a professional is vital to teaching. Try to ignore the picking and talk and give administration the information to handle the parent if they continue to cause problems.

I would get administration involved because it was an honest mistake. I would also tell the administration about her disrupting my work environment. I have the same thing going on. My administration is aware and they totally support me as well as my decisions.

If I were in this situation, I would take this approach to solve the problem.

I would inform administration about the issue just in case it progresses. Beyond that, I would probably just deal with it. The parent sounds irrational, and any attempts to rectify the situation will probably just make her more angry. The most I would do is apologize again for the inconvenience regarding the bus. Sometimes you just have to deal with a crazy parent!

I would suggest asking for a conference to discuss the progress of the child, then ask the parent how she feels the student is doing. Then throw in how you want to have better communication for the sake of the child.

Support from administration is never a bad thing. It is important to have a good relationship with the family of your students to give the student the most success. Trying to mend this relationship is important

I would address the issue with the parent that it was your mistake. Ask the parent what it is that you can do to be forgiven. If this is still an issue after you have talked to the parent then definitely get an administrator involved.
