County Assessments

My county creates math assessments that are correlated to the CCGPS standards and are closely related to the new Georgia Milestone assessment. These assessments have proved to be very difficult for students due to the fact that the students struggle with constructed responses. We are required to give these assessments to the students. It has been discouraging to say the least to see the results. We as 5th grade teachers are struggling with how to teach the students to think constructively. Are there any tips or suggestions for this. Any help would be appreciated!

I am a 5th grade teacher as well so I can relate to the difficulty of this situation. I would suggest giving practice constructed response. I would model what a good constructed response answer look likes and construct a rubric so that when students complete one, they know what they need to work on for the next time.

I believe a good way to help the students is have the students get into small groups and practice together on how to do the constructed responses. If they work together as a team they might find an easier way to do the constructed responses. At the end have the groups share their ways of how they were able to do the responses and then show them the rubric. You can possibly combine the different ideas while using the rubric to show the students what they were able to get right. They can then take this new way home and a copy of the rubric to practice by themselves.

Students learn to think constructively on their own. I would suggest to start asking higher level questions and model with think alouds while you are working through a problem.
