First, would encourage students to read AR books from the library that matches their Lexile level. I would closely monitor these books so they are reading on the appropriate level outside of my instruction as well. Secondly, I would divide students into quartiles based on a range of Lexile levels. Their groups would be based on the range rather than an exact level. Again, I would closely monitor their comprehension at their level to determine whether to increase that level, which would show growth.

Set up two different groups. One set would be divided by grouping those in the 800s with likeminded students, the 200s with the 200s and the 400s with the 400s, etc. The other set of groups would be set up by listing the students in order from highest to lowest. Cut the list in half and set it side by side. Then group according to pairs, This way you don't have someone working with a peer that is so vastly different from the others in the group. Set up stations for each set. For example Monday, Wednesday, Friday you could have the likeminded groups working together on assignments at each station. The higher groups would be given more challenging assignments at their stations. Tuesday and Thursday, you could have the column pairs working, moving from station to station.During these days encourage the students to talk though their thought process with the assignments. This will help them show their understanding and they will be "teaching" the others that work on a level below them.

The textbook response it level the text that students are reading. I would put those student on low reading level in groups and work with them until til I can assessment again to see growth. I would also use my high level readers to model for my low level students also.

Having students read consistently no matter what their level is is important in all grades because that is how students will grow as readers. Also differentiated learning should be utilized to help those students who are behind or not on grade level in order to help them gain reading levels.

Using groups based on lexiles would be a good way to start. I would also create groups with mixed lexiles so that they can help each other learn and make progress.

Students should be reading at their lexile level, but those in the 200s and 300s should be put in small groups to help improve their levels.

Make regular class trips to the library and make sure students know their lexile level.
