When trying to make the classroom a fun yet structured environment, what are some key rules to have in place for the students?

It is important to not overwhelm students with rules, but have a few very effective and specific rules such as listen and follow directions, respect your classmates and teachers, keep hands and feet to yourself, etc.

I agree with this task. You don't want so many classroom rules that students start to lose sight of them altogether, but to have just a few key rules.

First, there shouldn't be any interpretation available to your rules. For example: "Be responsible." It is very vague, and can mean different things to different people. A rule such as "Show up to class on time," is simple, direct, and cannot be misconstrued. When speaking directly about wanting to keep a fun environment, but keep it controlled, consider rules such as "Resect your classmates and teacher." This will (ideally) prevent fun behavior from turning to disruptive behavior.

I takeaway this insight and definitely keep it in mind for my classroom, to not have vague rules left open for interpretation, but clear straightforward rules for students to easily understand.

I agree with this. If I were in this situation this is what I would do . Having a few clear rules will make students aware of the main points.

As was stated before, make sure the rules are not vague. Extremely specific rules. State the precise rule. Then follow that rule up with the specific consequences. The most important part, do not let a broken rule go unpunished. Students should realize there are good and bad consequences. Break a rule, bad consequence. Follow the rules, good consequence.

It is important to have clear and specific rules in the classroom and go over them with students on the very first day of school. The rules should be reviewed daily for at least the first week with reminders. When students are in line, remind them to walk in a straight line, keep hands and feet to self, be silent, and stay one behind the next. Students need to know the rules in order to know what to follow. Students also must understand the consequences when breaking a rule. Rules can be structured and still be fun by telling students what to do instead of what not to do.

I think having strict rules is key and something I would use in my own classroom. I especially like how you mentioned to use the rules and go over them weekly, so that the students can fully understand and practice them.

Make sure your rules are specific. Rules like "no cheating" and raise your hand and wait to speak are nice basic rules to have. Also have your rules posted in the front and two other locations.

The rules I would set for my class would be: No talking when the teacher is talking. Stay in your seat unless told otherwise. Enter the classroom quietly and start warm up work. Be kind and respectful to everyone and their belongings. Put your hand up if you want to speak. Come to class prepared. Smile!

It is important to remember that we are their teacher and not their friend. We must put rules in place because they need to know that we care about their education and having/following rules ensures they stay on task and get the most out of their day at school. I think it is important to create a simple but concise list of rules. For example, in my opinion, some of the most effective rules include: treat others the way you want to be treated and engage in the class via discussions and completing your assignments. Setting up fun transition and attention grabbers could help create a fun environment as well. For example, I have seen a teacher clap a beat to gain the students attention as they have to repeat it back. The teacher does this a few times for fun and then goes into giving instructions which the students are pretty receptive of due to the fun environment.

One rule to have in place would be to have your student raise their hand before they speak. If a student just speaks out, it is disrespectful to you as the teacher and disrupts the class.

One good rule to implement would be to have students raise their hand before they get up. If they randomly get up during the lesson because they want to get out some energy or go to the bathroom, it disrupts the learning environment of the classroom. If they don't tell you where they are going and just walk out, you as the teacher won't know where they went or where they are at.
