Case
Name Calling

I have a student that insists on making up nicknames for every student in the class. The names are not necessarily bad but a lot of the students don't like them and it makes them upset, what is the best way to handle this?

Solution #1
Top Solution
Try talking to the student about showing respect for their classmates. Explain that one way to show respect is to call them by their real name, and only use a nickname if it is something that they have asked to be called.

i agree, talk with the student about respecting other students real names.

Solution #2
Pull the student aside and let them know that it is inappropriate to call people by another name if they didn't ask for him. Let them know that if the roles were switched that student wouldnt like it either.
Solution #3
I would pull the student aside and explain to them how their classmates do not like the names that they have been calling. I would let them know that I would like it to stop or further consequences may arise from it.
Solution #4
I would like to say you could call this student by a nickname they do not like, but the best course of action is discussing how nicknames do not always make us feel happy. Explain annoying nicknames to him, and hope that he will change his ways. After the discussion, when he tries to nickname someone, give him the stink eye.
Solution #5
Talk to the student and tell him not to call his peers names if they do not like them. Explain that if he continues to do this you will call home and if that doesn't work you will isolate him from his peers and take away privileges
Solution #6
the way i would handle it is pull the student aside and explain to them that the other students don't like the nicknames they have. and we could do a group discussion where the classmates explain why they don't like the nicknames and why it makes them upset.
Solution #7
I would have a class discussion about name calling and how nicknames can be hurtful. I would explain the concept of perception to the students and have open discussion.
Solution #8
Have an open discussion in the class about respecting each other and show them that calling names is not respectful, and there will be consequences if calling names continues.
Solution #9
If this were my student, I would sit down and have the students talk it out one by one. Have the student explain individually why they do not like this name, and that it upsets them. Once they have all gone around the room, explain to the student that it is not nice and that this behavior really needs to stop. Have him apologize and have a fresh welcoming start. Tell the student that if it does not stop they will have to go to the office, get a referral, detention, etc for the behavior and that they will have to call his parents.
Solution #10
I think it is important for the student to understand how they would feel if something was bothering them as much as the students are bothered by the name calling.
Solution #11
Simply this student should be addressed with this issue immediately. You never want you students feeling embarrassed by someone else inside the classroom, causes more problems in the future. This student should be warm that he or she should not be calling anyone names, or making up nicknames. If the issues continue, this needs to be handle in a more direct manner. More discipline actions need to take place.
Solution #12
There is a lot of great books that you can read to the class the discuss name-calling. I would read a book that you think best fits your classroom, you can then have the students come up with alternatives to use instead of name calling.
Solution #13
As the teacher, we have to put our foot down in this type of situation. Make it known that this type of behavior will not be tolerated within the classroom.
Solution #14
Ignore the insult. Don’t assume just because the bully says you are stupid that anyone believes that. If you know that is simply not true, everyone else probably does to. Often times a bully is going to pick on the most obvious thing about you that he or she thinks will bother you. Instead of taking it as an insult recognize it for what it is
Solution #15
Call a parent teacher conference.
