Case
Cliques

I have two students who are acting out towards the other students. They are both girls who pick on the girls with less friends. How do I stop this without crossing my boundaries as their teacher and not their parents?

As a teacher it is your right to stand up for what is right and to let students know that bullying is not acceptable. I would talk to all the students who are involved in this case and let them express how they feel and have them apologize.

I forgot to mention that I liked you idea of pulling the students aside, overall nice post.

I like that idea very much so.

i agree with talking to the students and letting the know bullying is not acceptable.

i agree with this solution

Hi aDaWaV, In my current classroom, there is a girl clique. To deal with this behavior, my co-teacher and I taught a social/emotional lesson about bullying and how to treat others. We had the students make a pledge and write three ways in which they would change their behavior on flashcards. We made a poster out of their flashcards and hung it in the classroom to remind them of their pledge. If this continues after the lesson, I definitely think the parents should be informed and the students should be conferenced with. Ask the parents if this is an issue for them with their daughters friendships outside of school. Ask if they would be willing to work with you on addressing this issue. Melissa

Wow, what a great idea!

I would pull the two girls who are influencing this issue. It is important as their teacher to let them know this is causing other people to feel down and is considered bullying. I would keep a watchful eye out to see if this continues and get feedback from the students feeling put down.

Yes, I forgot to mention in my comment, that I should make sure to keep a close eye on them after speaking with them while also making documentation if something may happen.

I would definitely talk to the two female students and reinforce the rules or consequences. It is important that they know you will not tolerate bullying in the classroom. Make sure to check on the students being bullied, ask if the girls need to speak with a counselor.
Solution #5
Have a strong classroom management plan along with rules and regulations against bullying. Some students may not realize what they are doing is bullying. One girl telling another girl she doesn't like her shoes may not seem like a big deal to the first, but a huge deal to the girl who is being picked on. Do a lesson on bullying as well. It is something, even if covered in the beginning of the year, all the students need to be reminded about. A more simple solution would be to separate them in class, but this won't stop what happens in the hallways.
Solution #6
When it comes to bullying, the school has set procedures with dealing with this behavior. Check your school's guidelines and make sure to follow those.

This is a great solution. It is always important to go by the procedures set in place by the school for matters like this.

Solution #7
if you don't step in you are allowing the bullying to continue. you tell the students that are bullying if you see it happen again the parents will be involved. and if the actions continue the school will be involved. bullying will not be tolerated in school.
Solution #8
If the bullying and misbehavior is really bad, then try to separate them from each other. I have seen teachers do this when I was younger and it worked. When I was in school there were two friends whowere girls as well and they were so bad that the principle requested the teacher to separate them. It worked, but if that is something you are not comfortable with, then have a conference with their parents and tell them that this behavior is not tolerated and that privileges will be taken away.
Solution #9
It is important for you to defend your students against bullying. I would pull these two girls aside and conference with them together and one-on-one if the behavior continues. The whole class needs to be addressed, but these two students need to have an individualized correction. I would also call the parents and explain to them what is happening. Monitor their behavior and continually correct their bad behavior.
Solution #10
I personally would address the entire class. You don't have to mention any students names or examples. The students who are involved will know who they are. While address the entire class I would mention there could be consequences if the behavior continues.
Solution #11
If they are all students of mine, I would create a group assignment where I would require them to work together. While doing this I would periodically take time to check to see how they are getting along. This activity would allow them to get to know each other better. Maybe they will discover that they have some things in common. If this did not work then I would then use the opportunity to counsel the girls about their behavior and speak to them about the consequences of their behavior.

I think talking to the whole class is very important, but out of experience I have seen that this not always works. As soon as I would notice the bullying keeps going on, I would notify the parents the same day.

Solution #12
I would pull the two girls that are bullying aside privately and let them know that you are aware of their actions that you want them to know you care about everyone in the classroom and that bullying is not tolerated in your classroom. I would think of assigning an assignment about bullying and have an open discussion with the class about it.
Solution #13
I would try to stop this as soon as possible. I would call each of their parents to see if they can talk to them at home and if this doesn't work I think you should separate each of them in different classrooms.
Solution #14
I would speak to them both after class about the situation. If the behavior continues, let them know that their parents will be contacted because what they're doing is bullying. Make them aware that what they're doing causes others to feel sad and that's not okay. How would they feel if they were treated this way?
Solution #15
Speak with them and talk to them about how hurtful bullying is. Make sure to document every situation and loop in administration and parents.
Solution #16
Explain to both of them that this is unacceptable behavior! Explain that bullying is taken very seriously and more drastic measures will be taken if they continue the behavior.
Solution #17
Get the parents involved or the guidance counselor. Separate the students and tell them if they can't be nice to others, they aren't allowed to hang out together in your classroom.
Solution #18
As a teacher it is your responsibility to stop bullying and this is a form of bullying. I would explain to them the consequences for their actions and if they continue the behavior I would involve their parents then the admin team.
Solution #19
You are not crossing boundaries. Bullying should not be tolerated at all in the class. When you hear or see these girls being mean to other girls, immediately step in and stop them. Don't let little sly remarks go. Nip it in the bud, right away. Discuss with both of them together, and even separately that their behavior will not be tolerated. If one of them is the leader of the two, work with her and use her as an example so the other will also stop.
Solution #20
Have group meetings with students and talk about it as a class.
Solution #21
It is very important to stand up against bullying. Some students do not know what they are doing is wrong so have a talk with all the students and diffuse the situation.
Solution #22
I personally would address the entire class. You don't have to mention any students names or examples. The students who are involved will know who they are. While address the entire class I would mention there could be consequences if the behavior continues.
