Case
Changing stories

After chastising the student for deliberate disobedience and insubordination during class, somehow you know a different story would work its way home. Sure enough! That very same afternoon the boy's father, called the school to demand an immediate conference.
How do you deal with this situation?

Solution #1
Top Solution
I would oblige the parent's request to have a conference. It would probably be a good idea to have a conference anyway since the student is being disobedient. I would outline for the father why I believe the child's behavior is insubordinate. I would show him my notes on specific events that happened on specific days. I would listen to the father's concerns and assure him that what I am telling him is the truth.

I agree with this case study. I will utilize this information once I become a teacher.

Solution #2
If I could have already predicted that fact, I would make sure to have taken detailed notes wi time stamps to further prove my case. I would go as far as I can with records for proof.

I agree, I would go into the conference handy with notes and examples of scenarios where something may have occurred. I would discuss with the father what is exceptable behavior and what is not, so that we both are clear on expectations in the classroom.

I like this solution. I am all for proof. I do not want top come to a parent without any facts.

I was just thinking this. Have the student write the details right after it happened to make sure that you can show the parents.

Solution #3
I would make sure an administrator is present at the conference, after very carefully documenting incidents with that particular student. I would ask the father to reiterate the story the student went home with, and then tell him what actually happened. I would provide the documentation supporting your claims and discuss the possibility of a behavior contract. I would also not chastise the student in front of the class, but in the hallway in the presence of another teacher or an administrator. I would also notify the parent when the student acts inappropriately before the student gets home with a difference version of the story.
