Case
Tattoos

I am interested in knowing some schools' policies are for teacher tattoos. Are they to covered at all times? What if a teacher has one on their ankle, wrist, behind ear? I would like to know from teachers whom have received teaching positions with tattoos, just how the rules are.

I have talked to several teachers that have tattoos and others that do not, about how they got their job. They all said it all depends on the principal. Some principals are tough on tattoos and others do not mind as long as there are no inappropriate tattoos visible. You should cover-up as best as you can for an interview and when you are there, I would ask their policy on tattoos.

I think this is a good idea!

I agree that it is up to who is hiring you. This is the best solution

I agree. Asking multiple people that work at the school you want to apply for is a great way to inform yourself of policies with that principal.

I would recommend covering the tattoo during the interview if possible. I have a tattoo and it is on my foot. I can easily hide it if necessary, but no one has ever said anything to me about it. However, anytime I go for an interview for anything, I make sure it's covered. I know at other schools teachers can show their tattoos without fear while others have to have them covered. It truly depends on the school and the hiring committee.

I agree i think you should cover up your tattoos for an interview

Solution #3
It all depends on the school/district's policies, as well as the principle. In most cases, it's expected to have tattoos hidden when on the job. I have met quite a few teachers who don't have to hide their tattoos, as long as they are not inappropriate. Some of the appropriate tattoos teachers have had are flowers, quotes, breast cancer ribbons, animals, etc. Something they'd want hidden is nudity, cursing, violence, horror, etc. To be safe, I would hide any visible tattoos if you are unaware of the policies your school, or expected school, has.

It seems to be all up with the school system, but covering up just in case is good for the interview.

Great post being that there are no real rules on Tattoos at school. Hid them for interview purposes but after that tattoos are fine as long as they are appropriate. example of something inappropriate would be a Naked lady. Flowers, quote, butterfly, etc you're fine.
Solution #5
It's all dependent on the school and the principal. Though when you go to an interview it's always good to cover it up so you look even more professional. Times are changing now so it's much more acceptable depending on the school.
Solution #6
I know that a lot of schools want teachers to have tattoos covered. Yet I have seen teachers with small tattoos showing.
Solution #7
Every school is different and has their own personal preference when it comes to teachers and their appearances. Now a days, most schools are perfectly fine with tattoos as long as they are appropriate. This means no gang affiliations, no nudity, no foul language or anything you would not want children to see. Typically, private or religious schools prohibit tattos but it is best to simple as the principle.
Solution #8
It is case by case. Some schools can be really strict, some can be lenient. I have seen teachers with visible tattoos. Just make sure the ones that can be seen are tasteful.
Solution #9
I am currently an intern at a middle school and have a full sleeve. I talked with my cooperating teacher about this and she has absoutly no issues with them. I have seem quite a few teachers on the campus with them where they are clearly visable. I have also talked with the current principal about this and was even offered a job after graduating (im a second level intern). While he has absoutly no issues with the tattoos we did discuss how that is totally up to the principal at the school on the tattoo tollerance.
Solution #10
I think it depends on the principal. Some care, some do not. Perhaps try to cover them during the interview.
Solution #11
I would cover the tattoo to the best of your ability and ask about the policy once in the interview. The Principal may be okay with tattoos if they are easily covered.
Solution #12
I know that a lot of schools want teachers to have tattoos covered. Having said that their are tattoos that you can't cover them. It comes down to two things one your principal and if the tattoos are not negative ones.
Solution #13
I've noticed that most principals don't mind tattoos as long as they are appropriate. For your interview I would still cover up and ask them what their policy is on tattoos.
Solution #14
As an intern with tattoos, I have not personally had anyone come up to me to tell me that my tattoos need to be covered, not even the principal. I believe that it is best look up the school's policies and teacher's handbook on this issue.
Solution #15
It all depends on the principal and the school distract rules. Try your best to cover the tattoo accordingly.
Solution #16
I have found that the policies can vary from school to school. I would cover during the interview and be sure to ask about it when meeting with the principal.
Solution #17
each school has different policies. i would ask the school principal what the rules are on tattoos. i would also recommend being respectful to your students
Solution #18
I know one of the teacher in my school have a tattoos in her arm but she always cover it, one teacher have one in her wrist but its a tiny one. I guess it is depend with the school and the tattoo's size and where it is located.
Solution #19
I currently work at a school and many of my co-workers have tattoos and it has not been an issue. Now when I completed my internship for school they were very strict about tattoos and they had to be covered at all times. So I really think it depends on what school you work in
Solution #20
The school I work for allows your to show tattoos, but limit piercings to 5 (visual) piercings. Personally, I have a small tattoo on my wrist that says "Ana" in memory of my late grandmother. No administrator, teacher, or parent has noticed (or noted) it in conversation with me. This is not to say any tattoo will be okay or fly under the radar. For instance white supremacy, and overly sexual tattoos would be considered reasons for not getting the job.
Solution #21
I have spoken with my mother-in-law who is na administrator at an elementary school and she said that most of the time tattoos are not an issue. At her school, the principal is more concerned with your credentials and experience than with your body art. She did however say that most of the teacher's at her school that have tattoos do usually have them covered for the vast majority of the day but it is the teacher's choice; it is not forced by the school.
Solution #22
Not a teacher, but I have heard from teachers that it depends on the school district and the school. Districts that are not so high class may have teachers that have visible tattoos, and that's fine because the students come from communities where they see a lot of the same things. In this era it is important that students can relate to their teachers. So, it just depends on the region.
Solution #23
So long as your tattoos are easily concealable or otherwise not explicit, I would not worry too much about the situation! Consult with the principal on these subjects, however, to ensure this.
Solution #24
I think there are probably some schools that frown upon teacher with tattoos, but I think we have certainly come a long way in people realizing tattoos don't impact one's ability to do their job. Make sure to check with your district and schools you're interested in before applying.
Solution #25
Each school and county is different. What may be acceptable in one school will not be in another school. I would just double check during the interview or ask someone who would know at the job. Best chance, cover it up until you know for sure.
Solution #26
I do believe that as long as the tattoo is not inappropriate then it is okay but I do also think that they should be covered during the interview process just incase. Although, during the interview process teachers should ask if it is okay to have a tattoo.
Solution #27
I know several of my previous teachers who had visible tattoos. Some school's may vary but as long as they are not too distracting and they are not inappropriate or vulgar then they should not be too much of an issue. I would cover them for an interview and during the interview, at an appropriate point, I would reveal to your employer that you have them and ask if they will be of any issue. In most cases the answer should be no as tattoos are far too common now a days, but if it is an issue you should ask if you must keep them covered as you did for the interview.
Solution #28
Some schools are different. Some want no tattoos that are visible, others do not want inappropriate tattoos that are visible. For your interview, I would consider covering your tattoos to the best of your ability. Making sure that you can not see them. And also making sure that during the interview, that is one of the questions that you ask.
Solution #29
Teachers are suppose to cover up their tattoos. If the teacher was hired with a visible tattoo behind the ear, then the board of education need to review that teacher's position.
Solution #30
From doing internships, I have seen teachers with smaller tattoos, but when going on an interview I feel like first impression is very important and tattoos school be covered to look more professional!
Solution #31
I have seen some teachers with their tattoos fully displayed, but this was mostly in a high school setting. I think in elementary school settings they are a little more strict about what can be shown. If the teacher has a tattoo in a difficult place to hide, they may be asked to wear make-up over it.
Solution #32
I seen and heard teachers are allowed to have tattoos

I disagree with hear say as a response. You should always get the appropriate information before or at an interview. Every school is different best to check.
