Students in question of abusing school technology

Yesterday, while in my ESOL Practicum classroom, the teacher received an email from the school's media specialist that shared a current student misbehavior. At some point that morning, a student used a school Kindle to log-in to Amazon and complete three purchases. He did not say what the items were, just that a student Kindle was being used for a shopping spree. My CT was super nervous because several of her students had been on and off the Kindles that morning. She had no idea to even go about talking to the students about it. If you were in her situation, how would you go about this? What would you do?

Since the teacher doesn't know for sure that the misbehavior came from one of her students, she shouldn't throw out any accusations. She could talk with students about expectations while using the Kindle and other school technologies. Reiterate to students that school technologies are to be used for school work only, and that no unauthorized sites should be visited on school devices. Explain to students that anyone found to be visiting unauthorized sites will face consequences, such as losing their technology privileges completely.

In addition, I would start assigning the students to certain tablets/computers. That way the search/browser history can be tracked and linked to a specific student. The browser history could easily be pulled up and addressed with the student. If the browsing history was cleared, that would be an indication that something was purposefully erased and I would address that with the student.

This is a great idea! She'll know exactly who does it the next time it happens and she'll be able to take appropriate action.

I think it's always best practice to go over technology rules and procedures before allowing students to go off with devices. If this happened to me I would talk to my students about how that is inappropriate and unacceptable. If necessary, find a way to block or restrict access to certain websites/applications.

I would discuss the school policy and procedures with the entire class on school items.

As a teacher she should not be scared to adress this with the students as they are in the wrong. Also as a teacher she should be able to go back an find out who did the shopping or the media specialist should be able to see what was ordered and where it was being sent to. I would then address the student about ordering things on the school technology resources as that is not what they are for. I would then warn the student to not do it again as they would then loose the use of the kindles.
