Classroom Theft

What do you do if you have a student that continues to steal in your classroom?

Solution #1
Once you have proof that a certain student is stealing from others or just from the classroom in general, I would call home to schedule a conference with the parents of the student. Before going in to the conference I would be sure to have concrete proof so that you are not accused of being unfair or singling the child out. Then I would discuss with the student possible consequences, but also set up a system where trust can be renewed between you and the students. Perhaps this can be giving the student a chance to be responsible for something so they do not think to steal as often.

I think that having the proof is the most important part.

I really believe this is an issue for administration because theft is an actual crime. I would contact the parents after speaking with the administration to let them know that I want to do everything I can to help the child understand that honesty is paramount in society and that we must work together to get the student on the right side of the law.

Because this is such a serious issue I agree with your course of action. Contacting administration before parents is important.

First, I would make certain that I have the right student that is taking part in the taking of objects. Then I would let an administrator know that the issue is happening, so when I talk to the student about it and a parent calls they are aware of what is happening. I would then sit the student down and talk to them about why they are taking things. If the problem continues I would set up a meeting with the parents, and student.

I think this is a great solution.

If you can prove that it is a certain student, have a conference with the student first and have him tell you why he is acting that way. Then present that information at a conference with the parents and the student all together. I would also have my resource officer speak to him/her about consequences of stealing in the real world.

Have a conference with the student and their parents. Discuss what is going on and ways to fix the behavior but also make it very clear what will happen if this behavior continues.

If there is proof that the student is actually stealing, I would reach out to their parents initially so they are aware of the situation as well as delegate my own punishment and return of the items. If the student returned to the classroom and continued the behavior I would take further action and involve administration about the issue.

Well, that it a touchy subject. If you have proof that he/ she is stealing then I would discuss that with the administrator to see what they would suggest.

This needs to be handled immediately. These actions should be immediately brought to the attention of parents and administration. Theft can escalate quickly.
