Case
Rebel Substitute Teacher

The teacher leave sub plans for the teaching to follow but he decides to do what he thought was best and lectured students. What should the teacher do?

When you are unhappy with how your substitute teacher preformed, it is important to speak to the person who handles the hiring or setting up of subs and let them know what happened. You can't change the past, but you can always re-direct your kids. The information will hopefully be passed onto the sub so that they improve their duties for the future or the administration can chose not to use them.

Its good to tell whoever is in charge of the Sub that you were not happy with how they handled your class.

Solution #2
The teacher should make the person who is in charge of assigning substitutes to classrooms. Express your concerns with this person and have them note that you would not longer like to have this substitute in your room. If the administration sees this as a problem, they will handle it from their end.
Solution #3
The teacher should be vocal about the subs that they have in their classroom. It is okay to say that you do not want someone in our classroom.
Solution #4
I would talk to the person in charge of the subs. If the sub did that with you, im sure they have done it with others. On the other hand, i feel like getting the sub to do anything would be a plus.

A sub still has a job to do. Condoning behavior that is anything but unsatisfactory would impact your school district greatly.

Solution #5
Speak with the sub-coordinator and explain your misgivings.
Solution #6
This is an issue to take up with other people in charge. Try talking to the person in charge of the substitutes and try not to get the same sub for your class again.

I think that this is a good idea. Very helpful.

Solution #7
If you felt it was out of bounds, administration should know about it, but I feel many wouldn't see this as a huge issue since content is being taught. At least they aren't letting the kids talk the whole time and ignore the sub plans. Talking with your CT should be one of the first steps.
Solution #8
Unfortunately whats done is done! The good thing about most counties is that you can request not to get that substitute back and write a report on them.
Solution #9
I would document what the sub did and report it to the district. They are stepping out of line when they do things other than what the teacher has provided for them. I think changing up the behavior plan for what works best for the adult in the room is okay, but changing the content can cause the teacher to be behind when they return.
Solution #10
You can not really do anything about what happened in the past but I would try to talk to who sets up the subs and request not to have that sub in your class again.
Solution #11
Talking with the appropriate party directly above you is always the first step when you think someone has done something wrong, whether it is the CT, principal, or HR department.
Solution #12
I would contact the person in charge of hiring subs and tell them your concerns so that they can either share it with the sub or not hire that sub again. If that does not work, I would add that sub to a "do not sub for my class" list.
Solution #13
If you are upset with what a substitute is doing then you need to let either the principal or the person who is in charge now. If you do not want that sub in your classroom then it needs to be known otherwise they will just continue to be in your room.
Solution #14
Remind the sub that it is important for them to follow the lesson that is laid out for them. If the sub ignores this then try to get into contact with the people over the subs to communicate with what is going on. Also if you know that you are going to be out the certain day you can try to get a sub that you know and trust.
Solution #15
The teacher should talk to administration or talk to the sub. If the sub is going to be coming back to their classroom often it is important to have a good relationship with them. I would explain to the sub why you are teaching the lesson in that specific way and how it ties into the lessons afterwards. If they still do not want to follow your lesson plans ask administration kindly not to let them sub for you.
Solution #16
If able, ensure that this is not the sub you receive again. If there is a rating or comment system, be honest and truthful in your feedback. This substitute may be unaware of their poor methods.
Solution #17
I would suggest talking to the principal or whoever hires/places the substitutes in your school about this issue to have them address the problem with the substitute. I would also suggest trying to talk to this substitute about how your plans are important and the students need to complete he planned work as it is apart of the curriculum.
Solution #18
The issue needs to be addressed. It is not the substitute's decision on what the class should be doing. If there was information provided by the teacher then that is what should have been done. The substitute is there to fill in for the day and help out. The issue needs to be addressed. I would recommend mentioning something to your superior and let them handle the situation. They know who to talk to and how to communicate effectively. That is their job.
Solution #19
Go to your sub coordinator and let them know what is going on and to the sub boss and make all parties aware of the situation. A substitute position is to be the acting teacher to follow the plans and the schedule as is the norm for the students. Keep a record of good subs and try to request ones that you like in your room to teach your students .
