Distinct smell

I have a kindergartener who always comes into school in the morning reeking of weed and all her belongings smell like it too. Who should I confront about this and how (without sounding accusational)?

I think the best solution would be to first speak with administration about the problem and ask them what is the best way to proceed with this issue. If you directly contact the parents on your own they may become upset and defensive and it probably won't solve the problem. Maybe administration could set up a parent-teacher conference to address the problem.

This is a challenging situation. I think this course of action, along with any other markers of parental misconduct would be relevant to bring to a small sit down.

I agree. Perhaps consulting with the school guidance counselor would help create a solution. Guidance counselors are trained to handle sensitive situations such as this.

It would be best to contact the administrator. This follows protocol as you should always report any time you feel the child is in a risky living situation. I understand you concerns and hope it works out.

What I loved was how said to always follow the protocol.

I today's society we have to be careful because many people have medical marijuana cards. I know several families from school, my sons football team, on my daughters high school cheer team that have medical marijuana cards. They smoke it like cigarettes wherever they are or go. I still get so shocked when I witness it. They smoke it in front of their children. For the situation at school I recommend bringing it up to the schools guidance counselor who could reach out to the family.

I suggest reaching out to administration and have them assist you with the situation. Confronting the parents is only going to make them upset and defensive and will not solve the issue.

In this situation, I would send a letter home to the parents. In many states, Marijuana is legal medicinally so there can't be judgment passed, however, it would be beneficial to tell the parents of the smell lingering to school because people who smoke tend to become nose blind and do not realize they or their things smell like weed. This could have as simple of a fix of keeping the child's belongings away from their smoking areas or even spraying items down with febreeze or any fabric spray to eliminate the smell

I would take it up with you higher ups and with the parents as well. Just letting them know that the class can smell it on the child and hope to see if there is anything that can be done about it. There may be a possibility that the child would need a district enforced drug test to make sure their is no child abuse or neglect going on.

Hello, this is a great question. I propose that you talk both to the parents and the principal inside of a meeting. This way you can address the smell to the parents with the supervision of the principal in case the parents are offended in any way. You could also come up with a plan for the child to be in this environment less, for instance them doing their stuff when the child is not around or them going outside to do this activity.
