In the class that In interning in the teacher seems to have a hard time getting the students attention when they are in small group activities, this leads to off topic conversations and loss of control of the class. What strategies should the teacher implement to gain control of the class when they are having group discussion.
My suggestion is using hand signals and claps to get their attention. Using commands like, "if you hear me, touch your ears." may help too because they have to hear and obey the command. Also, maintaining eye contact is helpful.
I really like this method, I myself have seen it been used and it works great. In a classroom I volunteered in, the teacher uses the Finding Nemo "shark bait ooh haha" chant. It is an efficient way for the teacher to get ahold of whatever is going on in the classroom and get control of any students who are not following policy.
