Teacher uses illegal drugs on weekends.

I was in my first week of my first internship and a neighboring teacher came into my CT's room and was telling her how she had gotten really high (marijuana) that weekend and is looking forward to doing the same the next weekend. My CT quickly changed the subject and we never spoke about it. Should I have said something to the administration?

That should never be discussed in a classroom setting. Getting drunk or high should not be discussed at school. If it is then yes it should be brought up to administration.

Yes this was very inappropriate for school setting whether or not there are students in the room.

This could be a code of ethics concern potentially. However, it definitely should not be discussed in the school where students could hear the conversation. You could bring it up to your CT to see what they think about it. I'd also look into your states code of ethics for teachers to see if it goes against it. If so, then you could talk to administration, but I would talk with your CT first. And you could have a conversation with that teacher and your CT to talk about how this is not a conversation that should be had at school.

This is a great suggestion. Some districts may have strict rules on drug use and teachers may be subject to random drug screenings. This isn't a conversation that should be discussed in the school setting where students may hear. I agree that the best course of action is to review your district's code of ethics and then bring up the concern with your CT.

Yes, because she is talking about it in an inappropriate setting. This should not be discussed within the school.

I would talk to someone about it. It is not something that should be discussed in school, especially in front of children or peers.

i also think it is best to speak up because again students can hear this talk and it is not something you should be talking about with your fellow colleagues

This is definitely innappropiate to talk about in school. If the other teacher didnt say anything, you should take the right step to let admin know.

If it is brought up again after what happened the first time, absolutely say something to administration about it. It can be a code of ethic violation depending on what else had happened. At the end of the day, the teacher should have never mentioned it in the classroom.

Yes, it is ethically irresponsible to not report that information to the school's administration. They are not only breaking the law, but they should not be given the responsibility to care for students at the school.

I wouldn't necessarily get too involved in this topic. Although, it is a complete breach of our ethics code, we are just an intern and things like this are above our pay grade. I would bring it up to administration if it is an ongoing occurrence or maybe just ask your CT about the issue.

Yes, I would probably bring it back up to my CT.

That is a serious situation what I would do before saying anything to administration is to speak to your university supervisor and tell them your concerns. They can then help you determine the appropriate course of action to take.

What teachers do in their free time is up to them, but as soon as they start bringing it into a school environment, it becomes a bigger issue. I would speak to them and remind them that there is a time and place for things. If they continue to talk about it, especially in front of students, I would bring it up to administration.

Yes I would have brought that up to administration. Unfortunately that teacher should know better since we all must be compliant to the teacher code of ethics.

Clearly the teachers judgement is lacking and those discussions about drug use do not belong in school where students could possibly over hear. This should be brought up to administration because her drug use and discussing it with a fellow teacher is a huge red flag.
