ESE Teacher

The students is getting all their IEP minutes. The only issue is when I discuss with the teacher the needs it goes in one ear and floats out the other. I keep trying to help the teacher to understand the importance of where the student is struggling while in class. The ESE teacher blocks any ideas on how to help student be successful in my class. What should I do to best help student?

The teacher should be helping you out, but there are things you can do to help the ESE student. I would talk to the IEP team or administration to get more help in the classroom. For example, an assistant that works one on one with the student could be really helpful. The IDEA law says that schools are required to give special education services to students who need it. There are plenty of resources online for ESE students such as lesson plans.

This is very unfortunate for the student but I am glad someone is advocating for the student. I think that talking with the head of the ESE department would help a lot. This person is most likely on the IEP team for the student, and if they are not then you should find someone that is. Having other people understand what the student needs are may help get these needs written in the IEP.

If this continues, my best recommendation would be to either write a letter to the student's parent expressing where they are having trouble. If that does not work, I would recommend going to an assistant principal and see what they would recommend in this situation.

If I was a teacher I'll take the correct protocol of reading out to parent and other parties. This would make the situation aware and to see what accommodations could be made.

Are these issues and needs written out and stated in the IEP? If so, the teacher should be meeting the needs of this student as their teacher. I think you should type out a document with all the issues and concerns and have a meeting with the teacher to voice your concerns and what would help the student. Perhaps this will help get the conversation started in the right direction to help this student become successful on their level.

I would speak to administration about it. If the ESE teacher is not cooperating, the child comes first. There is an IEP team set up to discuss situations as such and administration who will be able to handle the situation as well. I would also make record of every time that you have suggested ideas and the teacher did not implement any of them as well. This would be great just to show that teachers track records

Remind him/her that their must be documented accommodations for future IEP meetings under IDEA. Sometimes it is best to get to the point and explain legal obligations.

The teacher should want to work together to help the student. However, if this problem continues to exist and the student isn't improving, I would share concerns with admin.
