Considering that technology can be unreliable at times, it is important to have backup activities and/or resources for students who are experiencing technical difficulties. Parents and students should be notified that technical difficulties do not interfere with attendance, as long as there is communication between the student/parents and teacher. The administration and/or technology support should also be notified to fix and hopefully prevent the problem from occurring again in the future.

On teams there is a way to set up a phone number students can call into the class with. They can't access the chat or camera but they can hear and participate in class until their tech issues are figured out.

This teaching/ learning method is still new to everyone, so there is a learning curve for both teachers & students. I think emailing or calling the parents/ guardians would be the first step to resolve this issue. Making them aware of the situation and asking for their assistance in helping the students log in would be the best course of action. Also, making administration aware could also be helpful since this issue is occurring with more than one student.

The teacher could record all lessons for all students to refer back to. This allows the virtual students to still have access to the same lesson, even if it might be delayed. The teacher should set an protocol put into place so virtual students know what to do when this issue arises (silent reading, a worksheet, etc.). Also, have the parents phone number (or the student if they're old enough) to be able to communicate to the students when Teams is acting up.

Remember during this time that technology cannot always be reliable. For students who are having technical issues during every class period, make sure as the teacher to write down their names and reach out the technology assistant. That person is the best bet to really troubleshoot the issue. I would also email those students the technology assistants name and contact information as well. Since many are having the issue, there are many options to be prepared for when this happens. Depending on the school district, use the corresponding site similar to Canvas. Teachers can create modules with online work and even Google Docs that explain the work for the students who are not physically in class.

First and foremost, the teacher should tend to his in-person class of students. However, it is equally important to be considerate of the unreliability of technology and the learning curve that hybrid teaching presents to both students and teachers. With that being said, the teacher should also preface that students' inability to log into the class will not be held against them as long as they communicate. Additionally, the teacher should have alternative options for students who experience technical difficulties. For example, the teacher can record the class through Microsoft Teams and then post the recording and other activities to Canvas for students to watch and complete later. There should also be an option on Microsoft Teams for students to call into the meeting with a phone number, which would allow students to still participate. Depending on the grade level being taught, students may require additional assistance from someone at home.

Having back up assignments or a backup plan is always a good idea when relying heavily on technology for lesson delivery. Also, maybe recommend switching or using an alternative platform such as Zoom if you are having multiple and continuous issues with Teams.

One way teachers can prepare for these issues, especially during COVID, is to audio record the teams lessons. If the students email in that they are struggling with logging in, posting an audio recording to canvas of the lesson will be still be able to learn without it causing to many issuses.

A student that I babysat had issues with his Microsoft teams. The teacher always had a back up plan for when students could not get into the meeting.

work with the school technical support in solving the glitches and try to determine if there is anything on the teacher's end that is causing the problem. In the mean time, provide class lecture notes and activities that the students can work on and submit (even if in-progress) by the end of the class period or day. If the students find the outlines difficult, then consider recording the lecture portion of the lesson and posting it on the student's resources for the class.

I do not feel like this is something that you need to be worried about. This is an issue that Microsoft needs to fix. Is there another site approved by your school you could use?

It seems that during these difficult times many students and teachers are having issues with online classes. If the class doesn't log on for the student I would have a layout of what is done everyday in class, just like you would if class was in person. This way if the student isn't able to log on and is absent they can view resources and things they missed.
