What a great and fun opportunity for your whole class! Start integrating into your lesson plans songs, games and other activities from the child's culture. This will allow the student to feel safe within his environment.

The first thing to do is to establish the rules of respect of all students no matter what. Tell students it is difficult sometimes for me as the teacher to get up in front of a class and speak perfectly as it is for anyone. No tolerance from any student who puts down another student.

Have opportunities for student collaboration in smaller groups to build the student's confidence in his speaking ability.

I would get him talking by starting with small group work. There is a lot of pressure in paired partner work, but small groups with three students would be great. I would also be sure to include lots of songs, chants, and speaking into the lessons. The student will feel more confident by being able to talk amongst the other students. Not having the pressure solely on him to speak may help.

I would suggest working in small groups or pairs and pairing this student with kind, patient peers that are willing to help him and not make fun of him. If he can gain some of his confidence back talking with a few friends he will ultimately gain the courage to talk in front of the class again.

I would do a lot of community building activities where the students share verbally. Or you could add partner work where the students have to communicate with each other and share what they have talked about

I would integrate games and songs into my lesson plan. Do activities that are low stress while still covering the content. This will allow the student to start talking to other students and make friends so they won't feel as uncomfortable.

First, you have to speak to the whole classroom and have them understand that we should be treating everyone with kindness and respect. It is unfair to this student to feel that way and it is something that must be brought to the attention of educators and other students. You should also let this student know that they are doing great and that you are proud of how far along they have came with learning a new language and encourage them to keep speaking and learning it. Also, allow them to feel appreciated and acknowledged.
