Case
Child always hungry

I have a child who insists on eating a snack every day in my class. He says he cannot focus because his stomach is empty. This is the last class of the day.

Solution #1
Food insecurity is a big issue for many children. I don't like telling kids they shouldn't eat unless there is a valid reason why they shouldn't like if we are testing or on computers. Some kids do not have enough to eat at home, or their parents heavily control their food intake. I say if a kid says they need food, let them eat.

I agree that is is not good to tell a student they cannot eat in class when it is not an issue.

Solution #2
As long as it’s not a distraction to the whole class then I’d say let him eat. Especially since it’s the end of the day and you never know what home life is like, he might not have much time to eat elsewhere
Solution #3
I do not see anything wrong with students having a snack in class as long as it is not disrupting your lesson and teaching. Especially last class of the day, they might actually be hungry and only have food to eat at school before they go home.
Solution #4
I would allow the student to eat, but also this should be reported to the social worker. It could be food insecurity or a health condition which the school needs to be aware of. Look for any antecedent triggers, like if the student dislikes the class and is avoiding work or if they work well. Teacher's should be willing to analyze their students and collect data to figure of the source of issues. Generally, I would refer to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and allow students to listen to what their body tells them.
Solution #5
You never know what could be going on at home. There are unfortunately a lot of children who depend on the food given at school to cease their hunger. I would suggest having a conversation with the student privately and asking them what is going home. I would also provide him with snacks to take home just in case.
Solution #6
Many students enter public schools famished, which is a sad fact. Children who lack proper nourishment frequently live in communities where families are struggling. Hungry students find it difficult to concentrate in class and perform well. Keeping a small supply of healthy snacks, such as fresh fruits, low-sugar packaged snacks, and snacks made of whole grains, can go a long way in assisting a student in need. Offering refreshments to students before or after class can help them be more prepared to learn. Not all agree that it is part of an educator's job to feed their students. However, I would never deny any child food if they are hungry. Although, this doesn't take into account students diagnosed with exceptionalities and may have a condition where they constantly want to eat because of a sensory issue.
Solution #7
As irritating as it may be, some children are not getting fed enough at home due to unfortunate circumstances. I would just have a small snack ready for him to eat in private before starting the period. Sometimes, it is more than just him being hungry.
Solution #8
The student may be going through something, but since it's at the end of class, that means that this student is not eating at lunch. This may be an indicator of disordered eating or bullying, maybe students are throwing their food out. As a teacher, I would take the time to observe the lunch period or investigate with people who work that period and see what is going on.
Solution #9
He may not be gettig food at home. Try to find out if it is something that he actually needs or just a ploy to get teats through the day. He may just want them for the heck of it. but if not, there may be at home issues that need to be addressed.
Solution #10
I would talk to the parents and explain to them this issue and how he is distracting the class. They may be able to send their child more snacks to last them the whole day.
Solution #11
In the class I observed, they always had snack at the end of the day because lunch was so early in the day. An when their was a student that seems hungry, the teacher would send out a form for the students parent to sign. The form was for students to get bags full of food that would feed them till the weekend.
Solution #12
At the end of the day kids are growing so this could be a possibility for why they are hungry. It might be important to pull them to the side and ask if they are able to eat at home. Some kids are only able to eat at school due to home life.

Speaking to the child is helpful, but maybe getting parents involved would be more beneficial.

Solution #13
Allow the student to eat, and perhaps check-up what is going on at home. Maybe the child is not getting enough food at home. I would suggest allowing the student to eat in class.
Solution #14
As long as the student is not distracting others by eating and is still completing work then I would say to allow it. Also, it may be a good idea to create a space in the classroom for this student.
