Decorating without Distracting

I've heard so many mixed ideas about how classroom decorations can be distracting. Some teachers say "less is more," and others say that it is a way to bring excitement and a "home-like" feeling to a classroom.
What are some ways we can decorate our classrooms to be welcoming, yet not too distracting?

Solution #1
While having too many things on the wall can become distracting, I feel the "less is more" attitude can sometimes create a disengaging environment. To create some welcoming yet nondistracting decorations, you could create a bulletin board containing information to inform students about upcoming school events and even make a space to display student work in the class. Whether it be instructional material, motivational quotes, phrases, organization devices, or decorations, I feel it is crucial to make sure anything you put on walls in the classroom has a purpose.
Solution #2
I think having important more than distracting things placed and posted around the room is key. I would say having posters of class rules is important also important academic charts and posters are important too. A few motivational posters or welcoming posters are always a nice touch.
Solution #3
I think it's important to make sure your decorations have a purpose beyond making the room 'pretty'. If a student can also learn something from the decoration, then that is a good thing!
Solution #4
I do believe that keeping a simplistic but welcoming. classroom is very important. Ensuring that all of our students feel comfortable and welcomed in our classroom is extremely important because it defines how attentive they are and if they are able to concentrate and actually learn.

Welcoming is very important!

Solution #5
I definitely come from a more maximalist approach, but I also don't think you need to put so much stuff around the room that you don't have empty spaces. You could have flex spaces that could alternate what is on the wall during certain times of the year. I think too many decorations would cause undue stress to you and possibly the students, as you might be constantly trying to put things back where they belong or not knowing where to place something new. Creating a welcoming space for the students is one of my top priorities and I believe I can accomplish that with decor. I would definitely watch a lot of classroom tours or look at Pinterest to get ideas on what resonates with you for your classroom.
Solution #6
I like having important information for the students can be helpful. I think charts or words can be helpful to students more than distracting.
Solution #7
Decorating a classroom is actually very important for fostering a welcoming and comfortable environment for students to learn in. No one wants to spend a good portion of their day in a dull, lifeless room where they're expected to learn in! A few good ideas for decorating the walls with would be informational posters, an expectations (rules) list, and projects that students have done about their families. The elementary classroom I observed in for a semester had a section of the classroom wall covered in the introductory project and had all the students' faces and families on it. This is a nice touch to making the classroom "theirs". We must avoid putting too much stuff up though because that's when the atmosphere can turn overwhelming.
