Word Problems and Comprehension - 3rd Grade

Hi! So, we are almost finished with our first trimester, and our kiddos are great. However, they were not taught simple things like breaking down a word problem. We have tried quite a few times to teach them how to break down a word problem and use context clues to figure out how to solve it, but no matter what we do, there is still over half of the class that will get confused, not even try, or get it completely wrong. What are your word problem life hacks?? Thank you!

An option to help with word problems could be to make one that talks about. people or items inside of the classroom instead of random people or objects. If students can physically see who and what we are talking about some maybe able to process the information better.

Try using visual aids like diagrams or drawings to help explain the problem while teaching third graders how to understand word problems. Divide the task into smaller, more doable steps, and ask students to find important details and hints in the text. Improving comprehension and engagement can also be accomplished by offering possibilities for practical application and real-world experiences.

Giving visual cues like pictures that go with the word problems would help. Maybe a picture for each sentence so that it breaks down the question and also gives a visual aid.

I would try to isolate what specifically the students are struggling with. This issue goes back to some fundamentals that the students do not understand. Try to practice the basics first, then work back up to word problems.

I think a good way would be to use relatable things. not the usual such as "the train traveling or apples and oranges" You need to find something they are interested in or they know about.
