In my experiences working in the school district as a paraprofessional I have seen more negative punishment and positive punishments for decreasing undesired behavior in the classroom. For example, for a negative punishment I have seen teachers take students favorite items away until the misbehavior fades. Most of the time this results in the student's misbehavior escalating and/or increasing instead of decreasing. And for a positive punishment I have seen teachers give students a verbal reprimand as soon as the behavior occurs and in front of the whole class. Most of the time this embarrasses the student and results in them saying things like, "I don't like you". I have not seen a lot of negative or positive reinforcement to increase students desired behaviors in the classrooms. A positive reinforcement adds a stimulus to increase the desired behavior while a negative reinforcement removes a stimulus to increase the desired behavior. Positive reinforcement can involve giving a student a sticker after finishing their work. I have seen students who take one sticker and then cry because they cannot receive more. And a Negative reinforcement can include letting a student have breaks to complete an assignment. Sometimes I have seen students abuse their break privileges and stay in the break area longer than necessary. Which method do you think is most effective for establishing effective classroom management positive/negative reinforcement or punishment?
I agree, having the student just step out to the side with the teacher can avoid the embarrassment they could feel and not make them lash out more.
