Addressing Bullying in the Classroom: Dropped the f-bomb

During the last period today, I encountered a distressing incident involving a group of female students who bullied another girl by pulling up her shirt, throwing her bookbag in the trash, and spreading rumors about her. The victim left my class in tears, and another teacher comforted her in the bathroom. After being informed about the incident, I addressed my class with a stern message against bullying, highlighting the dangers and consequences of such actions without naming the perpetrators directly, though their awareness was palpable. In the heat of the moment, I expressed my frustration in a manner that I later reflected on as unprofessional. I said "that is not gonna fuckin happen in my class". Given the small private school setting where I work, with many students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, and the administration's current awareness of the incident without any disclosed consequences, I am seeking advice on how to navigate this situation effectively, including dealing with my own response and ensuring a safe, respectful environment for all students.

Solution #1
Hey there! This is such an upsetting incident to read about. As a female who struggled with the same problem as this student, I greatly relate to this situation. It is important for those girls to have consequences for their actions. Administration / guidance counselors need to be involved immediately. I also think parents need to be contacted about this behavior. Now, with your response, I would recommend that you have a discussion with your students about how you reacted to this situation. It is not wrong for you to feel strong about anti-bulling. You need to tell them that it is normal to make mistakes, even as an adult. You should consider owning up to your bad language and apologizing.
Solution #2
Hello, We all make mistakes and judging by this incident I can tell you have a lot of compassion for your profession. I think the best course of action would be to sit down with your students and express the way you expressed the situation was wrong, but also encourage the importance of the anti bullying movements. There should also be more parental involvement. Just remember when dealing with these situation in the future to be mindful with what you say.

It’s important to address bullying calmly but firmly. Apologize for the language, then work with admin on clearer consequences and support.
