Phones in the classroom

I am wondering what everyone's best practices are for when students are using phones in the classroom. I know most teachers will say no phones and if they see it they will take it. I'm wondering if there are better practices than just writing them up or taking their phone to ensure that they don't continue to actively use it.

Solution #1
I would say to set clear rules about phones and maybe offer a short break depending on class time length so that they stay motivated and engaged.
Solution #2
Instead of just taking phones or writing students up, try setting clear expectations for phone use. Let students know when it's okay to use phones for certain tasks (like research or apps) and when they need to be put away. You could also create a system where phones are stored in a designated area during class to keep them out of sight. Another idea is to use phone-related activities, like educational apps or online quizzes, to make phone use part of the learning process. The key is to balance giving students some freedom with maintaining focus during lessons.
Solution #3
When it comes to managing phone use in the classroom, a more proactive approach can be more effective than simply taking phones or writing students up. One strategy is to set clear expectations about phone use at the start of the course and integrate those rules into the classroom culture. If phones are needed for learning, make sure to set specific times for their use and give students clear instructions on when they should be put away. For those who struggle with phone distractions, consider using apps or tools that limit phone access during class time. Offering alternative engaging activities can also help minimize phone use. Building trust with students and involving them in the conversation about phone use can lead to better cooperation and focus.
