Case
Student's coming to school sick consisently

What should you do if you have a student who consistently comes to school when they are visibly sick? I don't want the spreading of germs and for others to get sick but the parents keep sending them even after mentioning that they should stay home and we can share all work they missed to keep them up to speed.

Solution #1
I would talk with administration and the school nurse to see the best way to keep the student from getting others sick. It may be tough for the parent to watch the student when they are sick.
Solution #2
I think it really depends on how sick they are and how common it is. If it keeps reoccurring or goes on for more than two weeks with no positive changes, then I highly recommend you contact their parents and ask them about the situation over the phone. Depending on the situation, if it's just a small cold that maybe lasts a week, the student is wearing a face mask, they're not having any sort of major coughing or sneezing fits, and are well sanitised, then you should be fine. Most of the time, a parent should be able to tell within a few days if it's a standard head cold. influenza, or mononucleosis. Granted, if it is that, not all parents have the money or purposefully choose not to take their kid to the doctor, most likely relaying on over the counter medicine. When I was a kid, I always wanted to make sure I was in class, but even my parents told me when I needed to stay home, adults have sick days too. I feel like it would be a little harsh to do, but have them sit to the far left or right or possibly sit in the back at a good enough radius away from the students (similar to the Coronavirus seating).
Solution #3
That’s a tough situation, especially when it involves the well-being of other students. First, it’s great that you’ve already communicated with the parents about the importance of keeping the student home when they’re sick. You could try reaching out again, this time focusing on the health and safety of not just their child, but the whole class. Sometimes parents don’t realize how contagious certain illnesses are, so emphasizing the impact on other students might help. If the student continues to come in sick, consider offering a plan for missed work, so the parent knows their child won’t fall behind and can stay caught up while recovering at home. You could also make sure to have a conversation with the student, explaining the importance of staying home when sick, not just for their health, but for the health of others. If the situation persists, you may need to involve the school nurse or administration to help address the issue and ensure a solution that keeps everyone safe and healthy.
Solution #4
In this situation, it's important to prioritize the health and well-being of all students. Have a private, empathetic conversation with the parents, explaining the importance of keeping sick children home to prevent the spread of illness. Emphasize the support the school can offer, such as sending home missed assignments, to ensure their child stays on track. If the issue persists, consider involving the school nurse or administration to send a formal message about the importance of staying home when sick. Encourage the parents to take the necessary steps to protect their child and others.
