Why does the Site Constantly Switch from being Extremely Active to Mute?

This is more of an odd question if anything, but I've been looking through the site, and there alwaus seems to be huge multi month gaps in between the posts. I know this isn't as popular as say Reddit, but it feels odd for a large cluster of questions to happen at once and then there's silence for months on end.
