Keeping students on task

I am a student teacher who did a practice lesson that went okay. There was a lot of chatter in between my talking about the lesson and answering students' questions to where they got completely off task and created more distractions. Can you share some methods you use to keep students engaged and motivated during lessons?

make it fun create an game out of it and not just a boring powerpoint. also tell them if they finished their work then they can have free time but only if they keep the noise level down thus they want to focus on said task so they can get it done quicker.

I second adding an incentive to get work done early. There are a lot of solutions that could be utilized depending on the student's grade level. Younger children do well with reminders to stay on task and small rewards like stickers or erasers. Older children would likely do better with the former option.
