Letter to parents regarding improving grades

This year my 5th grade science students have done horrible in the first two quarters. The school has adopted National Geographic but I have chosen to use the Science Fusion textbook because I believe it is more conducive to student comprehension. The challenge with my students seems to stem from getting them to read and review the material at home. The diagnostic scores at the beginning of the year were extremely low. After numerous a continuous effort to connect and engage students I am finally starting to see some improvements. My principal would like me to write a letter to my parents. I was hoping to find some support as to where I should begin.

Solution #1
I do feel that you need write a letter to parents explaining the importance of the science assignments. I would suggest that you take into consideration, that many of your students may not have the support at home that they need. Take into consideration that the parents may not have the skills to help their children. Continue to encourage and work with your students. Make sure that you are addressing all you can within the classroom and try to reduce the number of assignments that they are required to complete at home. Finally, let's remember sometimes the home environment is not conducive for our students to complete homework.
Solution #2
It seems that your persistence is starting to pay off. Ultimately, you know your students and your decision to use the alternate curriculum seems to be paying off. Contacting parents regarding grades seems to be a great suggestion. Often, as students get older, parents do not realize where they fit in to their child's educational life. Receiving a teacher email, phone call, or written letter can remind the parents that their students still need support and encouragement in education.
Solution #3
I would encourage the parents to also be involved in their students education at home and encourage them to work on it with their students.

Yes! Love it!!
