In your English class your students are assigned a project, which needs prior approval, of giving a speech on the topic of ‘What I Want To Do With My Life'. One student, who is Catholic, wants to become a priest. His speech tells about his church, their fundamental beliefs, and his reasons for entering the priesthood. You allow the speech. Were any code of ethics principles violated?

I do not believe that any code of ethics were violated. The student is simply providing his answer to the topic as truthfully as he can. As long as there is no lesson about Catholicism, and the teacher does not provide information that may be for or against religion, this situation should be okay.

Eye opening read on this ethics topic. I agree with this solution.

I do not think any of the code of ethics were violated however I would be very cautious with that when it is regarding to religion.

We live in a nation founded on the principals of religious freedom. That right is guaranteed in the constitution and can not be stripped away for any reason at all. Let the child speak. A priest is a noble thing to aspire to be. Except for the celibacy thing. Ouch.

I found this study to be very interesting.

I do not think that any code of ethics principles were violated by this since it is not the teacher who is presenting their opinion to the classroom. The student has every right to share their beliefs in their project. It is even more important in this project since the topic has personal value to the student. Telling him that he could not write about wanting to be a priest could make him feel that his choice of career is less valuable than that of his peers.

I say no. You allowed them to pick their own topic and made no guidelines or restrictions for them. He choose that particular topic. He is protected by his 1st amendment rights, too. The separation of church and state only applies to the curriculum that the teacher is teaching.

No ethics were violated by the student giving this speech. As a teacher, you are not allowed to give your religious and political views. However, your students are perfectly within their rights to do so.

No ethics codes are breached. You didn't tell that student this or that is better. You let the student make his choices. Make sure the student knows to explain the facts and stick with that.

Students are entitled to their opinions and beliefs and they are not forcing anyone to join in on their beliefs or breaching the code of ethics by doing so.
