High School Spelling Test?

Mrs. Brookwest is a high school English/Language Arts teacher who notices that one of her 11th grade students has a significant deficit in his ability to spell words correctly. She feels that this could be a major problem for the student on all written exams. The students has an IEP but no condition which would directly link the student to an inability to spell. Mrs. Brookwest wants to help her student improve his spelling ability but all of the resources she comes across in research are written for a lower age group and she feels like worksheets intended for 4th grade students would be to condescending. What should she do in order to help improve his spelling?

Solution #1
Mrs. Brookwest should provide the student with a word wall with words on it and space to allow the student to add words in a resource journal. The teacher should also provides a sound assessment to see where the student is struggling and what strategies would the student most benefit from. The teacher should encourage the student to use the portable word wall in their own resource journal when writing. The teacher should assist the student in writing with using colored pencils to edit the paper and tell them the words that are incorrect if the student does not know and have them find the write word and write the correct spelling. This needs to be done on a consistent basis to see results.

I feel that giving students a dictionary to refer to can help improve their spelling and word use. Our county also implements a policy called BYOD, which stands for Bring Your Own Device. Students could use these resources as a spell check when writing for assessments and activities. I have noticed that since I have implemented these measure, writing assessments have improved.

I agree with this case study. I will utilize this information once I become a teacher. I enjoyed reading this idea.

The teacher could create a list of words for student to study. This list does not have a grade level on it. If the student is aware that they are having trouble spelling, then the student should not have a problem with the assignment.

Studying from a word lost and even making flash cards would benefit the student greatly. Also, if they have an extension assignment where they have to use the words in a sentence will help temp become more familiar and comfortable with the words.
