Case
First time experience

I was walking in the hallway while classes were changing. I happened to glance to my left and two students who were a couple feet away were all over each other. I have zero experience on how to handle this type of situation and I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of students, so I chose to ignore the situation. Other students were around these students and the moment was awkward. The students did notice my presence, however they didn't know who I was; just that I had noticed them and probably looked as if I was irked. What should I have done?

Solution #1
Ignoring the students is something you can never do. The problem will just increase from there. Instead maybe just say something like "let's get to class." This way the students see you there, and then hear you make a comment and then move forward to class.

I agree, just saying get to class is better then just ignoring the situation and letting them think it is okay.

Solution #2
If I were you I would not ignore the situation. It might have been more embarrassing watching this happen and the students noticing your presence. You are the role model for these students and students need to know that they are in school; these actions are NOT school appropriate. With that being said, I would have politely gone over, asked them to stop, and remind them that those actions are not school appropriate and they need to stop. If they ignore you, then that is when you either talk with another teacher or bring them down to the office.
Solution #3
You should immediately address the students and tell them to stop this unacceptable behavior. If it is ignored, then the students will just continue to act this way and the situation could become out of hand. All schools have a policy for PDA and I would follow it in whatever way necessary to remedy the situation.
Solution #4
I agree with several of the posts here, but do not believe that escorting students to the office for PDA is something a new person should take on on when they are new to a school. I would tell the students to quit and that if I catch them doing it again, I will write them up or take them to the office.
Solution #5
I would have cleared my throat loudly as I walked past to get their attention and use non-verbal communication to let them know their behavior is inappropriate.
Solution #6
As a teacher I should always stop inapropriate behavior immediently, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. When the other students saw that a teacher was there, they may have assumed that the teacher would be okay with that behavior. I would have walked up to the students and ask them to stop immediently, then I would ask them to follow me to the office. I would explain to them that not only was their behavior inapropriate but it is against the rules. I would then write them up, or detention, what ever the school code ask teachers to follow.
Solution #7
Most schools do have school policies when it come to PDA, or public display of affection. I would look up this policy and see how the school would like you to handle it so that next time you know what to do. If there is no school policy for it them I would recommend pulling the students to the side, explaining who you are to them and telling them that what they were doing was inappropriate behavior for school and if you were to catch them doing it again that you would be forced to get administration involved.
Solution #8
I would not have ignored the situation. That will only cause students to lose respect for your authority. I would have separated the two students and asked what class they had next. I would have told them to go to their class and that next time they would be going to see the assistant principal.
Solution #9
I think that addressing the situation right when you saw it would have been best. For example; just explaining that it is inappropiate to do this on school grounds. If you really do not feel comfortable doing this I would get another teacher immediately, so they could address the problem while it was going on.
Solution #10
In this situation, told the students that it was not appropriate school behavior. By not taking action, the students will not respect you.
Solution #11
I would check with the school's policy, but I am assuming that this type of behavior is discouraged. I would have told the students to that they need to separate and that this is not allowed in school. It wouldn't matter whether or not the students know who you are, what matters is that you are a teacher and it is your responsibility to ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
Solution #12
As a teacher you should have stopped an let the students know who you were and stopped the situation as soon as it was noticed. If they would have been disrespectful or disobedient then you should take further actions by sending them to the office.
Solution #13
I would ask the students to leave some space for oxygen to reach their lungs. This way they know I was only concerned for their safety. It's a light and happy attitude to adjust an awkward situation.
Solution #14
I would not have let the situation go and I would have said something to the students. Each school has different guidelines for PDA and students need to know that they needs to act appropriate on school grounds. These kinds of situations can make other students feel awkward and can be distracting to other students. If you do not say something now, other students will display PDA and cause problems. I know it is something that is awkward to address but you need to take light of it and try to have a sense of humor of it so the students can take you seriously and respect you.
Solution #15
I definitely would not ignore the situation because as mentioned it acknowledges that this behavior is appropriate. I would most likely go for the non-verbal approach and clear my throat or make a loud step in their direction to be sure they know I;m hinting at them. Waiting for eye contact from either of them and shake my head at them to let them know without further embarassment that this behavior isn't allowed.
Solution #16
By ignoring the situation, the teacher has broken school rules and also shown the students that their behavior is okay. The teacher should have gotten the students names, and possibly escorted them to the office. School is not a place for this type of behavior.
