Case
Hygiene

Albert is a 20 year old student in a self contained classroom. He continually is arriving to school with severe hygiene issues. His parents say he is bathed daily. From the evidence he is exhibiting the bathing is not happening. What is the best way to address this issue?

Solution #1
I would have a conference with the student, his parents, as well as the school's guidance councillor. I would explain to the parents that, although they claim Albert is being bathed, the his lack of hygiene is starting to become a distraction in the classroom. I would ask the parents and Albert what things they are doing nightly to promote good hygiene. I would have myself, as well as the guidance counsellor go over some other things that they should be doing. Albert will then have to go to the guidance counsellor weekly and discuss what actions are being taken at home to ensure personal hygiene.

I would have a discussion with him. Also, I would ask his parents if the mind if you send him home with a book. There are a lotof great books available, or even print something from the internet. Once he learns some techniques, he will be more confident, and more welcomed by his peers.

this suggestion seems good, meeting with the family in a more private setting.

Meeting with the family sounds like the best idea.

Solution #2
Well because the parents are already aware and say he is being bathed, I would try and have another talk with them and explain that hygiene is very important. Also I would include a lesson on hygiene so Albert can learned about it's importance

Excellent suggestion!

having a lesson about hygiene in class is a great idea!

I will utilize this information once I become a teacher.

Solution #3
I would include weekly social skills with Albert in a small group session(include hygiene). I would also give articles about how poor hygiene can effect him. This may allow for the student to feel less embarrassed in front of his class.

Excellent suggestion!

This is a great idea!

Solution #4
To start, I would implement a lesson on hygiene, followed by a special assignment for this student. I would provide him with a checklist that includes pictures, of expected daily hygiene. He would be responsible for checking the tasks off as he completed them every night. For the first week or so, we would have a private meeting every morning to review his progress.

Excellent suggestion!

This is a good suggestion, but I'm afraid this would embarrass the student which would not be good.

I enjoyed reading this idea. I will use this in the future for sure

Solution #5
I would have a conversation with Albert. I would engage in the conversation as you care about him personally and you want to help. See if there is anything you could help with. Maybe he isn't bathing and it's due to not having a bar of soap or a shower present. If it keeps occurring, I would sit down with his parents and talk things out because obviously something isn't right. I also like the include it as a lesson so it is something he can learn about as well.

Solution #6
I would talk with the guidnce couselor and principal about the issue and try to find a solution that would not embarrass him or his family. It's hard to understand a student's home life and situation. It could also be a medical problem.
Solution #7
I would first address this issue by giving a personal hygiene lesson within the classroom. Chances are he is not the only one that is not taking care of himself properly. This could be beneficial for all students. Albert may bathe daily but not using soap or washing his hair/body correctly therefore a lesson on how to do so may be necessary. Discussing Alberts hygiene with him during personal sessions could also be affective. Next, I would attempt a conference with the parents to express concern. Albert may need a checklist of things to do in the morning such as putting on deodorant, brushing his teeth, putting on clean clothes, etc. His parents could be able to keep an eye on his morning cleanliness routine. If nothing changes at this point, I would bring the issue to the school counselor to see if they have any ideas, come up with a better solution, and have a more effective way to address the issue.
Solution #8
Talking to his parents directly and giving a specific like the smell of his body could help. Just because he baths daily does not mean it is done correctly. He may not use deodorant either, some cultures do not. Speaking with the family directly and giving actual facts and helpful cleaning instruction could help.
