Motivational Strategies in the Music Classroom

My eighth grade acoustic guitar players are in a bit of a motivational slump. Many of them take private lessons, however, there are fresh beginners in both of my eighth grade courses. Therefore, while teaching beginners basic chords and scales, I have more advanced students working on high-level finger patters and strumming techniques. How can I keep the higher level students motivated during group work while I address the lower-level beginners during the same class period?

Solution #1
The higher level group could work with the lower level group to teach the skills that the lower level group needs to learn. It would be the same as peer teaching. Of course you cannot do this everyday, however, it could be a starting point.

Could you allow the higher level students to create their own song, or create a song as a group using the new techniques, patterns, etc. You could also have a reward system in place where they can earn something for accomplishing a new technique etc.
