My solution to this issue would work better at the start of the school year. For the first week or so I would stand at the door way with a trash can and require students to spit out their gum on their way in. After a week of this students will get the idea that if they don't want to waste their gum they will not chew it in the gym. While this won't completely fix the problem I believe if this is done for a week or two at the very beginning of the school year there will be less of an issue of it for the remainder of the year.

I found a good solution to the gum problem this year. When I catch a student chewing gum after I have warned them, I assign them detention. Detention for gum chewing consists of taking a flat-head screwdriver and scraping all of the old chewing gum from the bottom of the desks. After 10-15 desks, the student is disgusted and will think twice about chewing gum around me.

Chewing gum is a huge problem at my school as well. Whenever I see a student chewing gum I politely ask them to spit it out. That is considered their "warning". If I see them chewing gum again I give the child silent lunch and usually notify the parent. I am not sure what grade you teach but this usually works will with my middle school kids.

As a school, I would send home a letter to parents explaining the new policy about chewing gum and why it has been implemented. This way, parents would be able to check with their students on the way to school and make sure they at least weren't chewing it first thing in the morning. As far as later on in the school day, the other solutions would surely be helpful!

The rule about chewing gum should be made apparent at the beginning of the school year and consequences should be made clear and enforced. This can help prevent students from breaking that rule in the first place. Discipline a student who is chewing gum and it may prevent the others from doing it.

I would have each student checked in the classroom for a week. Instead of trying to check them all at once. If you find some repeat offenders then there should be a consequence for not following the school policy. Maybe the students that have been repeatedly identified could be the ones that have to clean the gum off the gym floor.

i would make a rule that if you are caught chewing gum in the gym, then you will have to start scraping it off the bleachers for the next 15 minutes of class or until the end of the period if their is only ten minutes left.

I would let the students know that 10 minutes before class was over you were going to do a gum check on the floor, and if you find any, then they would do laps that last five minutes of class. Majority of students do not like doing laps, and you will probably even see a few students looking around with you to try and get it up before you see it.

I don't think anyone can prevent students from chewing gum along as they have access to it. I would just keep and eye out for a student how many be chewing gum and from there speak to them about it.

I would dock points for students chewing gum, if the consequence is not major enough they will just continue to do it.

These are some great solutions. I would great each student at the door to identify who may have gum.. I would also require those caught with gum to scrape gum from the floors.
