I couldn't help it!

I'm a teacher that loves to get personable with her students. I show them that I care about them outside of my classroom. One night, I was supporting my students at a basketball game and one of my students needed a ride home from the game. She attempted to call her grandparents, parents, but no one answered. It was very dark outside. I decided to give her a ride. Is this against the code of ethics?

I agree with the comment above. Surely any teacher that really cares for his or her students would have done the exact same thing. I would certainly make contact with the parent when dropping off the student and make them aware they the student tried to call but did not receive an answer. I probably would have also called my administrator on the phone at the time of the incident to make them aware of what you were doing. I know there are some that would be against this kind of act but you couldn't leave the child there in the dark.

I would have done exactly the same thing. If it was my child, I would want to know that a teacher was looking out for their best interest.

I would have done the same thing! But, its important to keep in mind how things look. Teachers can be placed under a microscope at times and situations can be easily misunderstood specially if the student happened to be a young male.

I agree. I believe this is exactly what I would do in the case of a child being left behind. I would also contact an administrator to run it by them first.

I feel you did the right thing. Imagine if you had left the child there by themselves the trouble you could have possibly been in. I think it's our own judgement to do such as this. You know the student and the family no one else does. I as a parent would have appreciated it if my son was in this type of situation.

I would have called the non emergency line for the police station and asked if there was a police officer in the area to take the student home. You NEVER give a student a ride home.

This is against the code of ethics and should be reported to higher authorities within the school. The right thing to do is to call law enforcement or contact the school resource officer at the school game.

While this technically violates the code of ethics (you are driving a student off-campus), leaving a student in a dangerous position is also an unethical thing to do. I believe any teacher who cared about their students would do the same thing you did. Personally, I would call your principal and discuss what the best option is to complete. This also leaves records of everything that takes place in case anything were to go wrong. Your principal should know what to do in this position and it's entirely possible that there is a serious reason why parents never picked up the call. (I'm referring to dangerous reasons here, such as worst case scenarios. We have to be prepared for any situation these days and need to make sure students are safe at all times, including basketball games on a dark night)

I would have done the same thing. I like it would have been an issue if you would have left her there. Now, if it would have been a male student, I'm not sure if I would have taken the student home. I would not feel comfortable. As a way to cover yourself, I would let your administration know in an email. Did you speak to the parent when you dropped off the student?

I agree with everyone else that leaving the child alone would have been the wrong choice. If this was a school game was there not an administrator there? I would double check your counties code of ethics before doing this in the future though because I know in my county this is not allowed at all and most insurance companies won't actually cover transporting students.
