ESOL Teacher and Staff Development

The ESOL teacher has to start staff development at the faculty meetings. She is nervous about completing this task and educating teachers on ESOL strategies. She has only been teaching 2 years. The meetings will occur after school. Some teachers are upset that they have to attend the meetings and listen to ESOL strategies. What are some ways the ESOL teacher can redeliver the information in an interesting way?

My first suggestion to the teacher would be to make the meeting interactive. Find apps and websites that are useful to both teachers and students. Many times teachers have to provide extra interventions for students and having interactive and easy ways to do this is helpful to teachers, which may keep them from having a bad attitude about the meeting. There are often times that scores from ESOL reports are not easily understood. Our ESOL teacher has held a training for staff that breaks down the meaning and importance of ACESSS scores. She provided useful information for and helpful tips for using these scores in the classroom. Providing teachers with ways to make teaching ESOL students easier and more successful may be helpful!

The teacher should first explain to the students the expectations, goals, and outcomes of the staff development. One way to grab the teachers attention would be to give them a scenario. Set a scene up for them as to what a ESOL student appears in a classroom. Use teachers as part of this acting out process.

Technology is already used in the classroom, especially ESOL classes, so teachers should have to be able to communicate and keep up with their knowledge and development of ESOL by taking online quizzes and activities if they are not interested or have time to stay after school.

This is something that is furthering their education and understanding of how to teach diverse populations of students. There are so many children entering public schools every year and even every semester so this information is necessary for all teachers to know. I think the principal should explain that this training is necessary for everyone to comply with. There are many online resources that the ESOL teacher can use to deliver the information in an interesting way.
